English lessons at Waverley give pupils a profound appreciation of the spoken and written word and equip them with the skills to express themselves confidently in a variety of situations, both in and outside of the classroom. Skills acquired in English have a positive influence on all other curriculum subjects and are vital in any walk of life.
Pupils are helped to become fluent writers who can use language with confidence. They are introduced to a wide range of texts which they will read, analyse and perceptively compare throughout their five years of study, culminating with comparative essays at G.C.S.E. level.
Within the Department, we use a wide range of teaching and learning strategies which allow pupils to work independently, taking responsibility for their own learning and enabling them to work effectively with others in groups of varying sizes. We explore a variety of texts and other stimuli, and pupils are given opportunities to debate, discuss, analyse and challenge perceptions and ideas in order to develop their skills and learning. We have high expectations of our students– setting challenging but achievable targets as well as ensuring that they are inspired by our rich curriculum.
The Department’s schemes of work fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum. All pupils study English and English Literature at Key Stages 3 and 4 which covers poetry, drama, prose fiction, non-fiction and media. At KS5 English Literature is offered at AS and A2 level.
The Department offers many enrichment activities including: A Creative Writing Club, KS3 Book Club, Debate Society, Spelling BEE and Drama Club. In addition, we have introduced the importance of live theatre and run many trips to local and national productions as well as offering in house workshops with the ‘Young Shakespeare Company’. We also arrange visits for pupils to poetry readings and other literary events such as, ‘Poetry Live’. We are constantly striving to find new ways to inspire and enrich the learning experience of our students wherever possible and will continue to do so.
