How to help my child with their reading
What parents can do to help at home. Support and encourage your child to:
(1) Read Aloud to Your Child to Improve Reading Fluency (Bedtime stories)
Read aloud to your child to provide an example of how fluent reading sounds. Let them get a better sense of rhythm, intonation and, if you pick a variety of different genres, will develop an appreciation for all types of books.
(2) Work on Phonemic Awareness Skills
Help your child to practise the sounds they are learning in school following the guidance sent home from school. Read the phonetically decodable book that your child has brought home. This will be matched to your child’s reading ability.
Encourage your child to read words by saying the sounds.
Pronouncing the Sounds
(3) Build Sight Word Vocabulary
Practise reading the core word list sent home by school.
Sight words, sometimes known as core words, are the foundation of a child’s reading and writing skills. If your child can not quickly recognise common words.
