Early Years Foundation Stage

Welcome to Waverley Schools Early Years Foundation stage, where we believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life in order for them to fulfil their potential.

Our curriculum follows the Early Years Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, using the Development Matters 2022, and some aspects from Birth to 5 documents as a basis. Progression maps secure sequential teaching across all seven areas of learning, building upon prior learning from previous settings and experiences at home.  The Early Years Curriculum is carefully devised to ensure that children are introduced to key concepts , skills and bodies of knowledge that they will revisit in Key stage 1.  Motivating first-hand experiences are carefully planned to enable children to learn more and remember more.

Each year our curriculum is tailored to follow the interests, fascinations and needs of the current cohort.

We prioritise creating a ‘language rich’ environment through the use of songs, nursery rhymes, stories and providing time for quality interactions between adults and between peers. Oracy and vocabulary development are incorporated into all lessons as we aim for children to have the confidence and vocabulary to articulate their opinions and preferences.

In addition to supporting language development, we want our environments to be nurturing spaces, where children feel safe and secure. Environments that promote confidence and independence, allowing children to consolidate and deepen their knowledge, ensuring they meet their next steps.
